It’s high time this classic animal tale returned to the popular reading list for children. The Wind in the Willows is a story of life on the riverbank, although perhaps not a normal life, but one that is a little bit out of the ordinary.
Firstly, there is preposterous Toad of Toad Hall, who is very “British” and this is reflected in his amusing character. After all, the riverbank is set on the banks of the River Thames in London.
Although quite pompous, he is so likeable and of course he is always getting into trouble so the reader not only laughs at his antics but is sympathetic, too.
This anthropomorphic tale shows old Toad at his best as he delights in his passion for motor cars. However, it inevitably leads to his getting into trouble and eventually being imprisoned in an impenetrable castle. Is the reader surprised when Toad dresses as a washerwoman in his escape bid? Not a bit of it. A straight forward escape plan would not fit in with Toad’s somewhat eccentric character, after all.
His rather placid and long-suffering pals include Mole, Ratty and Badger all participate in this romping tale to carry the reader into the world of the riverbank animals.
Wonderful Illustrations Bring the Characters to Life
In this particular edition, award-winning artist Robert Ingpen brings not only the characters to life, but the settings too, with his incredible illustrations.
The Wind in the Willows was originally published in 1908, which must have been quite innovative at that time. No doubt the author, Kenneth Grahame, would be honoured to realise what a classic tale he penned so many years ago.
Above all else, this is a story of friendship. True, the slightly balmy Toad is the central character, but whilst the reader follows him around on his hectic and hair-raising journey, the real story behind his adventures is how his pals rally round to help him in his time of greatest need. It emphasises the importance of friendship and delights in the camaraderie of the animals.
In 1929 the famous playwright A.A.Milne wrote Toad of Toad Hall, based on The Wind in the Willows. Walt Disney saw the appeal of the story when the animated film was produced in 1949, and there has been an animated television series and a later film to delight all lovers of Mr. Toad and his band of animal friends.
