Grand Cayman is approximately 480 miles south of Miami and is one of a group of three islands that is the Cayman Islands. The other two are Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
Although only small at 14 miles long and just 8 miles wide at its widest point, Grand Cayman makes the most of its Caribbean lifestyle. George Town in the focal point and this is the business heart of the island. This is where the banking institutions reside, and the Cayman Government, the Law Courts, and a host of other businesses.
However, the uniqueness and heart of the islands is not lost amongst its busy heart as there are many gift and souvenir stores and coffee houses to cater for the many visitors that arrive frequently on the cruise ships in George Town harbour.
Small out of town malls along West Bay offer an interesting shopping experience with local crafts as well as products from around the world. Who would expect to find Scottish shortbread, for instance, on a Caribbean island?
Amazing Diving and Snorkelling Amongst Spectacular Reefs
The beaches are stunning, in particular Seven Mile Beach, which true to its name stretches for a full seven miles along the western shore. Most of the hotels are situated in this vicinity. For those seeking a little excitement and a change from the sunbathing, there are many dive centres across the island. There are wrecks and reefs to explore, and for the experienced diver try the North Wall, and amazing abyss at 6000 feet deep.
Grand Cayman cannot be called unique amongst the Caribbean islands, and it is true to say that it is not a place to visit if searching for mountains and valleys and incredible scenery. The highest point on Grand Cayman is just under 80 feet. But the friendly people and the relaxed and happy atmosphere offers a restful and relaxing place to take a vacation.
Turtle Farm Stingray City and a Visit to Hell
For those interested in environmental issues a visit to the turtle farm at Boatswain’s Beach is certainly a must. Turtles are bred and there is a conservation programme, so that some are released back into the wild. The turtle farm is a unique feature of Grand Cayman.
Believe it or not, there is a place called Hell in West Bay. It is a series of strange limestone formations, which really lead the visitor to believe the place is aptly named. There is even a Hell Post Office so that postcards can be sent to families and friends bearing the postmark “Hell”.
Another very special place is called Stingray City. A short boat ride away from the main island and a truly magical place is found. Stingray City is a very shallow area where visitors can hand feed the stingrays and watch the magnificent creatures glide through the crystal waters.
